Tennis Photos

Tennis is mostly the only thing I've taken pictures of this year. As I've been taking pictures at tennis matches for three years now, it has been a chance for me to continue practicing my skills. I've found that all this time spent taking tennis pictures has shown be exactly where to stand and when. I am also able to find settings that work decently for most lighting situations for tennis now, because of all the practice.

Folios

While it was originally our idea to incorporate headshots and quotes into our folios this year, Dan made the original folio template on all the spreads. We later realized that some adjustments had to be made as time progressed and we actually began to fill these empty spreads. We adjusted the mod so that the headshot was adjacent to the quote, rather than the headshot being aligned to the outermost edge with the page number separating the student's picture and quote. While it was frustrating, momentarily, to decide what spacing allowed for room to "breathe" while strategically implying paired objects through close spacing, we finally found the perfect spacing. However, we ran into issues again when we got to the folios for the club and team pages. The "page topic" section began to extend beyond the bleed line and therefore we had to make the decision of moving the student name and grade information up next to the quote for only these pages. While these folios...

Tennis Editorial

While no tears were shed, the tennis courts were often found with water on them. On hot spring days, ground moisture would seep through the cracks and puddle on the concrete. Because of this, the 2017 boys tennis team was not allowed to hold home matches. The courts were not considered to meet the standards to host. Construction to repair the problem began, in summer, creating an obstacle for the tennis program. Every summer, open court practices occur for anyone interested in trying out for the team. Graciously, Howell’s sister schools, stepped in to help. Howell Central and Howell North shared their courts on certain days of the week, both for the open court practices and the annual summer tennis camp. Construction finished at the beginning of September. The district funded the construction, where a drainage system was installed under the courts, cracks were filled, certain areas were resurfaced, and finally painted in the areas where cracks were filled. Although, the co...

Eclipse Page

Image
This is my favorite page in the yearbook so far. In fact, this was only the second page I designed, with the help of Dan and Dunaway, but this was the first page I designed with a relative idea of what I was doing. Sitting with Dan and Dunaway, we created the big idea of the page: the prominent panorama of the eclipse up top with the partial cutout. From there, I designed the remaining elements. Although the rest of the page is less important to the layout as a whole, I am satisfied with the general simplicity and clean cut look of this layout. Furthermore, designing the rest of this page was satisfying because I finally understood the rules of spacing between dominant modules and secondary modules. I suspect that this will continue to be one of my favorite pages (if not favorite page) in the book. I constantly go back to this page to pull elements for other pages because I know we've nailed our vision on this page.
